Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out and to analyze voters’ various preferences in voting for Regent/Deputy Regent in the General Election of Regional Head in Dairi Regency, in 2018. The voters’ political behavior in this general election was determined by internal and external factors. The research used a survey method; its type was descriptive quantitative combined with qualitative approach, and its nature was explanatory research. The data were gathered by conducting interviews, observation, documentation, and questionnaires and analyzed descriptively with SPSS software program. The samples were 100 respondents, taken by using proportional random sampling technique. The result of the research showed that there was the influence of some factors (preferences) on voters in electing the candidates who were in accordance with their expectation in the general election for regional head of Dairi Regency, in 2018. The most decisive preference (a must) was the program proposed by the candidates while the preference which was not decisive was money received from candidates or by their winning team. Religion did not become decisive preference (a must); however, the preference of ethnicity became the strong reason why voters caste their votes for their candidates.
